South
Dakota Sunday
In July, our synod
will be sending a team of youth and adults to serve on American Indian
Reservations in South Dakota. This team of 116 people represents twenty-four
congregations from our synod.
In celebration of
this journey, we are designating April 18th, 2010 as South Dakota
Sunday in our synod. Because the traveling participants need a solid base
of support back here at home, we are asking all congregations in our synod
to participate, even if they are not sending participants on the trip. Your
participation in this servant trip and in South Dakota Sunday means a few
things-
-
We ask you to keep the traveling team
and the people of the Rosebud and Crow Creek Reservations in your
prayers.
-
We are asking SEPA congregations to take
a special in-kind or monetary offering on South Dakota Sunday for our
projects on the reservations. One of our service projects is a day camp
for children of the reservation. We are hoping that all materials for this
camp will be donated by individuals, businesses, organizations and
congregations. A flyer and bulletin insert is available below with more
details including the items we are collecting.
-
If your congregation is sending youth or
adults on the trip, we encourage you to invite them to speak briefly in
worship on South Dakota Sunday so they can share with the congregation a
little about why those chose to serve this summer in South Dakota and what
they expecting with the trip. If your congregation does not have anyone
attending the trip, members of the South Dakota team are willing to
present a Temple Talk or Ministry Moment during your worship service.
Contact Molly Beck Dean at
mbeck@sepa.org if you would like to have someone speak with your
congregation.
Thank you in advance for supporting this
important ministry!

South Dakota
Servant Trip
The South Dakota Servant Trip is full. To put your group or an individual on
the waiting list, please email Jessica at
jmcalister@sepa.org
Our Synod Servant Trip
will be July 1-12, 2010 and is open to youth in grades 9-12
(in the 2009-2010 school year) and their adult leaders.
The group will spend some time in
Rapid City seeing sites like Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park,
continuing with group building and doing additional learning around Native
American culture. We will journey to the Rosebud and Crow Creek
reservations on Sunday, July 4th. Roughly 70 participants will
serve on the Rosebud reservation doing
hands on work projects
and running a day camp for local children. About forty people from our
group will travel further east and north to the Crow Creek Reservation to do
hands on work projects.
